It’s (A)live!
So the new gallery and timeline went live on Sunday night without too many hitches. It was breaking where the photos had no EXIF data initially. A few comments had been left in some of the python libraries used which caused errors on the live server. Thankfully an easy fix!
HairCrazy.info’s users have been a bit slow on the uptake. A couple of people have started their timeline but mainly I’ve had people moaning at me with the most useless comments such as “the photo reel has made it go screwy” or “the site used to be better and have more stuff etc etc etc”. The last comment is a blatant lie but it does tell me I need to seriously look into getting a search function. The Django site uses google for this but I think that’s a pretty ugly solution.
On the upside I now have a good piece of software that I can take to a new project. I’m more than a little fed up with HairCrazy. The reaction to the site redo has been pretty disappointing since it went live in May and I realise now I’ve spent the last 11 months working on it. I believe that’s mainly that my audience has changed – they’re much younger than when I started out and I’m now 6 years older. I wonder where >15 users went…
So I have an idea for a new project that I can modify the haircrazy application for. It should be pretty straight forward when I get Django set up on a new host.
One of my favourite parts of Django is the templating system. When I start my new project all I’ll need to do is rename my applications and variables to suit and then rejigger the templates for a new look. That will give me loads of time to work on the design and content.
Until then I’m having a rest!
